When Grow in Hope first began serving at Mulago Hospital, we witnessed dedicated and compassionate healthcare professionals doing their best to care for children despite deteriorating facilities. Leaking roofs, failing plumbing, broken windows, overcrowded patient areas, poor ventilation, and inadequate infection-control measures created unnecessary hardships for children, caregivers, and hospital staff.

Today, Grow in Hope is leading the complete restoration of the Stanfield Pediatric Infectious Disease Ward in collaboration with Mulago National Referral Hospital. The transformation includes expanded patient care areas, a new High Dependency Unit for critically ill children, oxygen available at every patient bed, six self-contained infectious disease units with private toilets and sinks, improved plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems, durable finishes that promote infection control, a new staff addition that frees valuable space for patient care, a renovated laboratory, improved caregiver waiting areas, and a welcoming entrance that reflects the dignity of every child who enters the ward.

Every decision has been guided by a commitment to faithful stewardship. We have intentionally chosen durable materials, worked alongside architects, engineers, hospital leadership, and licensed contractors, and carefully supervised every stage of construction so the ward will faithfully serve children for many years to come.

For us, this project is about far more than construction. A clean hospital reduces infection. A dry room protects a recovering child. Reliable oxygen can save a life. A private bathroom preserves dignity. A welcoming environment reminds frightened families that they matter. This is what Christlike care looks like.

As children receive medical treatment from Mulago's healthcare professionals, Grow in Hope seeks to strengthen the environment in which that care is delivered while walking alongside families with prayer, encouragement, practical support, and the hope of the Gospel.

Although tremendous progress has been made, work remains to complete the renovation. Every gift helps provide the finishing touches needed to allow this ward to fully serve thousands of children each year. Before the infant ward was added, vulnerable infants under six months often shared treatment space with older malnourished children despite having very different medical and nutritional needs. The new infant unit allows healthcare providers to deliver age-appropriate care, strengthen breastfeeding support, improve infection prevention, provide mothers with specialized education, and create a quieter, safer environment for some of the hospital's most medically fragile patients.

The renovation created dedicated areas for breastfeeding consultations and milk expression, along with four private rooms designed to provide extra care for fragile infants. Walls and floors were fully tiled to ensure a hygienic environment, while painting, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work were completed throughout the space. Cheerful green curtains, paintings of fawns, and encouraging Scriptures were added to bring warmth and hope into the unit.

Outside, we created a peaceful area where caregivers can rest and regain strength. Inside, a room was refurbished for hospital staff, including a kitchen where therapeutic milk will be prepared. New hot plates and a refrigerator were provided to support this life-saving work. We also renovated a training area and staff offices and added a beautiful research library for medical students.

The Outpatient Pavilion that Grow in Hope built in 2020 also received new tile on the floors and walls, making it easier to clean and more durable for daily use. The facility is used for outpatient reviews and spiritual care, including weekly Bible studies conducted by Grow in Hope staff. One of the final projects included converting a former office into a space that will soon provide physical therapy for children with special needs.

This renovated space was urgently needed and is now ready to offer safe, appropriate care to hundreds of vulnerable infants. On June 11, 2025, we had the privilege of participating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new hybrid solar pump at Nsinze Health Center IV in Namutumba District, Uganda. This moment marked a tremendous milestone in our three-year partnership with this government health facility.

Nsinze is located about four hours from Kampala—not far in miles, but made distant by difficult road conditions and heavy traffic. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the faithful and tireless Dr. Lubiite Allan, the lead doctor and surgeon who manages the facility. Dr. Allan has been a beacon of hope for this underserved region, serving a population of more than 300,000 with only a fraction of the resources needed.

Also welcoming us was Sarah, the head midwife, who was recently honored as the top midwife in all of Uganda. During the celebration, she was publicly recognized with a special award from the District Commissioner. It was a joy to see her hard work acknowledged, especially as she and her team safely deliver more than 150 babies every month—often with limited supplies.

For the health center's entire 80-year history, there had never been running water. Until now, all water was carried by hand in jerry cans. Thanks to your support, the new hybrid pump now supplies running water to every building on the health center grounds. Outdoor taps have also been added to each building for easier access. The well was tested and found to be strong enough not only to serve the health center, but also to support additional public taps for the surrounding community. Much is happening at Nsinze Health Center under the leadership and integrity of Dr. Allan, and we are excited about the future. In January 2026, we will have a full-time staff member serving the health center as a social worker and chaplain.

The ACU at Mulago Hospital serves approximately 9,000–11,000 critically ill children each year, making it one of Uganda's busiest pediatric units. Built more than a century ago, the 10,000-square-foot facility had deteriorated over time, creating challenges for infection control, patient care, and the daily needs of children, caregivers, and hospital staff.

In 2023, Grow in Hope completed a comprehensive renovation of the unit, transforming an aging facility into a cleaner, safer, and more child-friendly environment. The improvements enhanced infection control, strengthened the hospital's infrastructure, and created a more organized space that better supports both patients and healthcare providers.

Today, thousands of critically ill children receive care each year in a safer, more welcoming environment that reflects their God-given dignity. Beyond improving the physical environment, the renovation created lasting opportunities for Grow in Hope's social workers and chaplains to provide Christlike care through practical assistance, emotional support, and sharing the hope of Christ with children and their caregivers.

Every day, children with life-threatening illnesses are admitted to the Acute Care Pediatric Unit, where many remain hospitalized for days or weeks. Their caregivers stay beside them, providing much of their daily care. The wash area allows families to clean clothing and bedding without leaving the hospital grounds, helping them care for their children with greater dignity while remaining close at hand.

When the Water Stops

Most people assume a national referral hospital always has running water. Unfortunately, that has not always been the reality at Mulago.

During municipal water outages, patient care cannot stop. Healthcare workers must continue treating children, cleaning patient rooms and equipment, practicing hand hygiene, and preventing the spread of infection. Recognizing this need, Grow in Hope incorporated a large water storage tank into the project, ensuring clean water remains available when it is needed most.

More Than a Wash Area

This project does far more than provide a place for laundry. It strengthens infection prevention, supports healthcare workers, preserves dignity for caregivers, and helps create a cleaner, safer environment where thousands of children receive treatment each year. The Acute Care Wash Area:

• Provides an essential backup water supply during municipal water outages.
• Strengthens infection prevention and hygiene.
• Gives caregivers a safe place to wash and dry clothing and bedding.
• Supports healthcare workers by improving the hospital environment.

Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and crescent-shaped rather than soft and round. These abnormal cells can block blood flow and deprive tissues and organs of oxygen, leading to severe pain, anemia, infections, strokes, and organ damage. Pain crises can last for hours or days and may require hospitalization.

Uganda carries one of the highest burdens of sickle cell disease in the world. In some regions, as many as 45% of people carry the sickle cell trait, making it a significant public health concern.

For many children at Jeliffe Ward, hospitalization is not a one-time experience. They return throughout childhood as painful crises and complications require ongoing specialized care.

More Than a Renovated Building

A hospital room cannot take away the pain of sickle cell disease, but it can provide a safer, cleaner, and more dignified place for children to receive treatment.

The Jeliffe renovation improved the environment for children, families, and healthcare workers, creating a space that supports healing and reflects the dignity every child deserves.

Bringing Joy in the Middle of Pain

Jeliffe Ward remains one of the pediatric units where Grow in Hope regularly provides opportunities for children to play, socialize, and experience the hope of Christ.

For children living with sickle cell disease, hospital stays can become a familiar part of life, interrupting school, friendships, and childhood routines. That is why our staff intentionally creates moments of joy.

Through songs, games, crafts, Bible stories, prayer, and simple acts of kindness, children are reminded that they are more than their diagnosis. For a little while, laughter replaces fear, friendships grow, and hospital rooms become places where hope can flourish.

Many children who first meet our team during a hospitalization eagerly look forward to the next visit from our team, finding encouragement through both the activities and the relationships they build with staff who faithfully return week after week.

Christlike Care That Lasts

Although the renovation was completed in 2022, its impact continues every day.

Children continue receiving specialized care within these walls. Families continue finding encouragement. And even during painful hospital stays, children continue discovering moments of joy and hope.

This is the lasting impact of Christlike care.

Every year, the Mwanamugimu Nutrition Unit (MNU) at Mulago Hospital cares for hundreds—if not thousands—of children battling severe acute malnutrition. Malnutrition remains one of the leading contributors to illness and death among young children in Uganda, yet with timely nutritional treatment and compassionate medical care, many of these children can recover and go on to live healthy lives.

Before the renovation, the unit had gone many years without significant improvements. Worn walls, aging floors, overcrowded spaces, and deteriorating facilities created challenges for children, caregivers, and the dedicated healthcare professionals working tirelessly to care for them.

Grow in Hope completely renovated all four buildings within the Nutrition Unit compound. The project included painting, new tile floors and walls, improved patient areas, expanded outdoor waiting and treatment space through a renovated outpatient pavilion, playgrounds where children could safely play during recovery, new IV stands, and the purchase of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) machine to help healthcare providers diagnose and monitor children receiving treatment.

While these improvements transformed the appearance of the unit, their greatest impact was creating a cleaner, safer, and more dignified environment where healing could take place. The renovation encouraged healthcare workers, better supported caregivers during long hospital stays, and helped create an environment that reflected the value and dignity of every child receiving care.

This project also transformed Grow in Hope. Witnessing the profound difference that a renovated healthcare environment made for patients, families, and hospital staff inspired our ministry to continue investing in hospital renovations across Uganda. What began with one nutrition unit has since grown into a ministry that strengthens healthcare facilities while sharing the hope of Christ with thousands of children and caregivers each year.
