Helping Families Care for Their Children at Home

Raising a child with a disability is a lifelong journey of love, sacrifice, and increasing physical demands. As children grow into teenagers, many parents can no longer safely lift them into bathtubs, through doorways, or up steps. The weight of caring for a growing child can place tremendous strain on a caregiver's back, shoulders, and joints, making everyday tasks difficult and, at times, unsafe for both parent and child.

Families often need specialized wheelchairs, roll-in showers, transfer equipment, wheelchair ramps, widened doorways, ceiling lifts, or other home modifications to continue providing safe, dignified care at home. While insurance may cover some of these needs, many are delayed, denied, only partially covered, or not covered at all, leaving families with expenses they simply cannot afford.

The HANDS Program exists to bridge those gaps. By providing accessible home modifications, adaptive equipment, durable medical equipment, wheelchair ramps, and other practical solutions, HANDS helps families continue caring for their children safely at home while protecting the health and well-being of both the child and their caregivers.

Hayden, a young girl in Ashland County living with cerebral palsy, outgrew her wheelchair, leaving her feet dragging on the ground and without the head and neck support she needed. While her family appealed an insurance denial for a customized wheelchair, Grow in Hope purchased an affordable pediatric wheelchair that immediately restored her safety and comfort. When the appeal was approved, Hayden received her customized wheelchair, and the wheelchair provided by Grow in Hope became a dependable backup whenever her primary chair requires maintenance.

The HANDS Program also partnered with members of Trinity Lutheran Church, a local congregation, to install a wheelchair ramp outside Hayden's home, making daily life safer and more accessible for both Hayden and her family.

Bringing Hope Into Hard Places

Courtney and Amanda gather every Wednesday morning with a group of women to read Scripture, pray, and for encouragement in spiritual growth. They explore topics such as lamenting to God, renewing the mind with Scripture, forgiveness, identity in Christ, and learnging to bring anxieties to God. Participants consistently report feeling safe during the study. At times, women quietly shed tears as they reflect on grief or difficult experiences, and these moments are handled with dignity and care. Courtney and Amanda often leave the sessions feeling deeply blessed to witness God at work.

Meeting Needs. Sharing Hope.

Hope Delivered grew naturally out of a relationship formed through our Hope in Hard Places Bible study. One of the women who faithfully attended later learned she would be transferred to serve a two-year jail sentence. Before leaving, she asked a simple question: "Will you stay in touch with me?"

That request became the beginning of Hope Delivered.

Today, Hope Delivered connects caring volunteers with women who are incarcerated or recently released through handwritten letters of encouragement rooted in the hope of Jesus Christ. For those still behind bars, each letter serves as a reminder that they have not been forgotten—that someone knows their name, is praying for them, and believes God is still at work in their lives.

The ministry also provides encouragement and accountability for individuals recently released from correctional facilities, helping them remain connected to healthy relationships and supportive Christian community during one of the most challenging seasons of life.

Hope Delivered blesses not only those who receive the letters but also those who write them. Every letter becomes an opportunity for volunteers to pray intentionally for another person, put their faith into action, share the love of Christ through simple words of encouragement, and remind someone that hope is never beyond reach.

Sometimes a handwritten letter cannot change someone's circumstances, but it can change how they face them. It can remind a discouraged heart that they are seen, valued, prayed for, and deeply loved by God.

Today, Hope Delivered continues to build relationships through faithful correspondence, sharing the hope of Christ one letter at a time.
